Retinol, retinal and tretinoin: what's the difference?

A clear guide to the vitamin A family and how to start safely.

The family

Retinol and retinaldehyde are cosmetic forms that convert to retinoic acid in the skin. Tretinoin is retinoic acid itself and is prescription-only in Switzerland.

What they do

Retinoids increase cell turnover and support collagen, helping with fine lines, texture and acne.

Starting slowly

Begin two or three nights a week and build up. Dryness and flaking are common at first. Use sunscreen daily.

When to avoid

Retinoids are generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask a doctor if unsure.
