Chemical peels: superficial, medium and deep

How peel depth changes results, downtime and suitability.

Superficial peels

Using acids such as glycolic, lactic or salicylic, these brighten skin and help with mild texture or congestion. Downtime is minimal; a series is usually needed.

Medium peels

Often TCA-based, these reach deeper and can address pigmentation and fine lines. Expect several days of peeling and careful sun protection.

Deep peels

Deep peels are rarely performed today and require medical settings. Many clinics now prefer lasers for deep resurfacing.

Skin type matters

Darker skin types carry a higher risk of pigmentation changes with stronger peels, so assessment by an experienced practitioner is important.
